Alternative treatments are very popular in curing various diseases. In fact, a considerable number of people resort to finding alternatives whenever they feel that a recommended treatment will not work for them. However, there are a number of claims regarding the effectiveness of alternative treatments, some people still voice out their doubts about these procedures.
According to Andrew Ziskind MD, senior vice president at Premier Academic Alliance, the problem with alternative therapies is that there is no clear boundary regarding their use. In this aspect, people involved in tradition health care system and alternative therapies find themselves in the middle of conflict.
In addition, most alternative therapeutic procedures are supported by very minimal amount of scientific evidence. Though there are some large studies conducted about their efficacy, the number is still very few to provide statistically significant proof. For instance, only a few researches took the time to study Reiki. Moreover, results of these studies pose difficulty during comparison and analysis because of the inclusion of various endpoints, including anxiety, pain, and depression. Likewise, the participants were individuals who were engaged in specific medical treatments at the same time.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, though Reiki, a popular alternative treatment, was proven to not have any harmful effects, its specific health benefits remain unclear.
The lack of research on alternative treatments can also be attributed to lack of funds, as the consumer and market demands focus on academic and federal research.
Meanwhile, some scientists think that it is a waste of time and money to conduct research on alternative therapies. In fact, there are well-known medical specialists who claimed that such forms of treatments are highly implausible.
Another setback of relying on alternative treatments is that medical insurance providers do cover the cost for such procedures given the lack of evidence regarding their effectiveness. On the other hand, acupuncture sometimes becomes the exception, as this practice has already been covered in other practices and is also proven to have certain health benefits, especially in pain remedy.
In general, the views of people, particularly medical experts, greatly vary when it comes to alternative therapies. Though some may keep an open mind about these practices, some remain skeptic despite claims of effectiveness
